The year 1980 was filled with important events in relation to the Cold War. The year began with the continuing problems of the Russina invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and it was the second year of the Iranian hostage situation. In the summer months, Poland became the center of a political and economic crisis with the workers strikes and the formation of Solidarity. Iran and Iraq also began fighting a war that would continue for the next eight years. Politically, it was an election year for the United States. President Carter was busy fighting the Republican candidate, Ronald Reagan. Carter also responded to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan by boycotting the Moscow Olympic Games. The culture of America was changing as the a new decade began. John Lennon was shot by an obsessed fan and Sony released a revolutionary new home movie camera. Mount St. Helen's erupted in May and NASA sent a probe to Saturn. Even though 1980 is the beginning of the last decade of the Cold War, it was not mild regarding tension between the two sides. There was much division and misunderstandings by both the United States and the Soviet Union.
