The year of 1979 was filled with turmoil and chaos for both the United States and the Soviet Union. What we see is the beginning of the end of détente, a crisis in Iran and the invasion of Afghanistan. Economically the Soviets were in a tailspin and the United States was looking to the future with the impending growth of modern technology and computers. The signing of the Salt II agreement would be short lived while the Soviets battled their own Vietnam in Afghanistan. The Pope plays an important role in solidarity by visiting his homeland of Poland and speaking words of inspiration. The moral seemed at its worse between the two countries.

By the late Brezhnev period, the entire picture of the Soviet Union had changed dramatically. The Soviet leadership confronted an increasingly bleak prospect on both the domestic and international scene.
