1950 marked the fifth anniversary of the end of World War II. Though the cost of that struggle was still fresh in the minds of the victors, international tension between communist and democratic states would continue to grow. In China, Mao Zedong continued to consolidate control over Mainland China and sought out international recognition for his Marxist Revolution. In the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin would enter his 23rd year of his rule and find a new ally in Mao. The United States would continue to send massive amounts of aid to Western Europe in an effort to safeguard the region from communist sympathies and to gain a better understanding of Wisconsin would begin an inquiry, which would grow into a witch-hunt.

Though the major powers had been at peace for five years the specter of an armed nuclear conflict haunted the relative calm. In 1950, the Cold War would turn "hot" for the first time on the Korean Peninsula and the possibility of a third World War would seem much closer.
